The first Styx album I heard was the one preceding this, 'Pieces Of Eight', a great and varied rock album, and still my favourite by this band. 'Cornerstone', by comparison, disappointed me. Not surprisingly, they share similar production values, but not quality of material/5(). Originally released in , Cornerstone contained the massive rock ballad "Babe" which spent two weeks at #1. Cornerstone made it as high as #2 on the Top album chart, cementing Styx's place in Rock & Roll history. Now available on gram vinyl/5().
The songs aren't as tight or assertive as their last few albums, but Shaw's presence can be felt strongly on most of the tracks, especially where the writing is concerned. Perhaps the prototypical I-love-you-but-I-just-gotta-go power ballad, the song was Styx's first No. 1 hit, and it propelled the album to platinum-plus status. Led by that track as well as "Why Me," another Top 40 hit, Cornerstone is Styx at their most accessible and melodic/5(). Cornerstone is the ninth studio album by the American rock band Styx, released in Styx's third straight triple platinum selling album, Cornerstone was Styx's only album to earn a Grammy nomination, which was for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.
